79AD - Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, by Pliny the Younger (excerpt):
"A cloud was rising ups - it wasn't clear those viewing it from a distance which mountain it was coming from, although it was later found to have been Vesuvius. Its shape was more like a pine tree than any other tree."
